Grade nine students experience Black Gold on take your kid to work day

Every year RBC sponsors “Take Our Kids to Work Day” across Canada inspiring grade nine students to start thinking about their futures. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a first-hand experience in exploring various career paths.
Black Gold is comprised of departments including:
-
Senior Management
- President

- Vice President

- Project Managers

- Office Manager

-
Emergency Response Planners

-
Administration

-
App Department

-
Mapping

-
Hazard Calculations

-
Training

-
Field Consultants

The grade nine students spent half an hour to an hour with each department. They were given an overview of departmental roles and where they fit in the bigger picture of Black Gold. They spent time in these departments:

-
Office Manager
- Orientation

- Safety overview

- Introductions/walk around the office

-
Administration
- Communication / Public Relations

- Emergency Response document orientation

- Telephone lists

We asked them what they wanted to learn from the day’s experience; they answered:
- How a business is run

- How a business is started

- What people and jobs make up a company

- Understanding what kind of jobs there are

- Applying skills learned today to real situations

The girls said their favourite aspects of the day were:
- Learning how everyone’s jobs are connected

- Learning how location can change the job

This experience is integral to the students learning and allowing them to experience an office setting for a day. It is great to now have them thinking about what they could potentially do in the future. Through their time at Black Gold, the girls learned how an emergency response plan is created and all of the tasks that need to be completed before submitting to regulatory agencies and sending to the client.
